Wyandotte County was founded in Kansas Territory in 1859, and was named for the Wyanodot (Huron) tribe. Moses Grinter, the first white settler in Wyandotte County, operated the first ferry crossing of Kansas River beginning in 1856. The Kansas City (KS) Town Company was formed in 1868, and in 1886 Kansas City, KS was incorporated. In 1997 the governments of Wyandotte County, KS and Kansas City, KS were consolidated into a unified government.
