Topic: Curtis

Kelsey

My great grandfather, Curtis Calvin Kelsey, moved "three miles north of Humboldt" in 1870. He died in 1894 and the funeral service was conducted by the Rev. L.I. Drake. Does anyone know what church he was pastor of? Probably Baptist of Methodist. The graveside ceremonies were conducted by the Odd Fellows of Humboldt. Does anyone know if they are still in existence and, if so, how to contact them? This info came from his obituary which was in a Humboldt newspaper. The Humboldt Union?

I have a copy of the Humboldt section Cutler's History of the State of Kansas. Has any other local history been written?

I would be most appreciative of any info relating to these questions. Thanks

Thomas McCabe married Anna Spear in Rock Island County, Illinois on 11/6/1865.

I believe he moved to Kansas or Nebraska. Anna died giving birth to my Grandfather William who was sent to live with relatives in Omaha.

Thomas then married her sister (I don't know the name or location) and had several children.

I'm trying to find that gap in my genealogy.

Anyone able to help?

Thanks, Bill McCabe

Secret and Benevolent Societies

From: David P. Graham graham_4486@msn.com
Date: Thursday, May 11, 2000 10:06 AM

While recently in Iola doing research on my Wilkinson and Graham lines I had occasion to visit the Colony Cemetery to locate several Wilkinson grave sites. On several of them where separate engravings with the initials "AOUW" and "MWA".

While looking back in the early 1900 newspapers, I came across a listing of "Secret and Benevolent Societies" listing of meeting times and places.

I would like to know where I can get information as to what the initials stand for and what the organizations purposes were.

Can anyone point me to a reference or document where I can learn about these organizations??

Thanks in advance and have a great day!!!

Dave Graham

From: Yvonne Tibbetts tibbetts@concentric.net
Date: Saturday, April 22, 2000 02:44 PM

William Selby ANDREWS arrived in Iola Kansas about 1871-75. I have been told there are records of his having worked in a sawmill for a time in Iola. He sang in the church choir and met the church organist - Martha Board CROKER. They were married in Iola, KS.abt 1880-1881.
Can ANYONE tell me:
1. When did William come to Iola?
2. Where were William S. ANDREWS & Martha Board CROKER married?
3. What was exact date of their marriage?
Any suggestions where I can find this information?
Thanks in advance for your help.
