John Jacob Ludlum

John Jacob Ludlum was born in Illinois August 31, 1877, and passed away November 1, 1968 at his home, 301 S. Colborn, Iola, at the age of 81 years.

Papa John came to Kansas from Illinois in 1880 with his parents in a covered wagon, at the age of 3 years, coming from Fulton County, near Astoria. His parents settled on a raw prairie farm six miles southwest of Elsmore, Kansas, living in their covered wagon until a cabin could be built. The cabin was finished, plastered and all two years later. He lived in Allen County, Kansas, near Elsmore, most of his life.

On February 26, 1902, he was united in marriage to Lela Jan Leffler at the bride's home. They then went to live in the farm home which John had furnished for his bride.

In 1908 he was appointed County Commissioner to complete the unexpired term of his father, and was re-elected to several terms. In addition to farming, he was associated with his son, Merl, in a hardware store at Elsmore for a number of years. He served the Elsmore community in many ways. While a member of the School Board he signed the High School diploma for each of his three sons and also three daughters-in-law.

He was a member of the Elsmore Methodist Church, serving as Sunday School Superintendent, and holding other church offices.

He is survived by his wife, Lela Jane Ludlum, of the home; three sons, Ralph of Bartlesville, Okla, Earl of Pittsburg, Kas, and Merl of Estes Park, Colo.; six grandchildren, seven great grandchildren, and three brothers, Warrn of Chanute, Kas., Frank of Meeker, Okla, and Will Ludlum of Elsmore.

John D Gregg

John D. Gregg, 85, died this morning at the home of his son, Edward Gregg, 31 N Second street.

Mr. Gregg was born in Warren County, Iowas, coming to Kansas when he was a boy. He has lived in Allen County most of his life and was a member of the Presbyterian Church.

In addition to hi son, Edward, he leaves a foster daughter, Mrs. Leona Ethel Gregg O'Neal, St. Petersburg, Fla.

Services will be conducted by the Rev. E.C. McConnell at 10:30 a.m. Monday in the Sleeper Chapel. Burial will be at Highland Cemetery

Mrs. Goldie M Black

Mrs. Goldie M. Black, 73, a long time resident of this community, died this morning at the McAtee Rest Home.

Born at Uniontown, Mrs. Black has lived in Bourbon or Anderson counties all of her life and in recent years made her home at 21 N Second street. She was a member of the First Christian Church.

She leaves two sisters, Mrs. Gertrude Provalut, Bartlesville, and Mrs. Florence Sharpless, Iola; three nieces and two nephews.

Services will be conducted by the Rev. Laton Chambers at 3:30 p.m. Monday in the Sleeper Chapel. Burial will be at Highland Cemetery

Mrs. Ralph McKinney

Services for Mrs. Rosa Jane McKinney, whose death was reported Wednesday, will be conducted by the Rev. Robert Means at 2 p.m. Monday in the Sleeper Chapel. Burial will be at Highland Cemetery.

Mrs. McKinney was born in Bates County, Mo., coming to Iola with her husband about 50 years ago. She was a member of the Baptist Church and the Rebekah Lodge.

She is survived by a sister, Mrs. Bessie Sandefur, Wichita; two brothers, George W. Brooks, Milton Freewatere, Ore, and Alvin Brooks, Mattaw Bay, Calif.

Her husband, who operated a feed and produce store in Iola, died several years ago.

H.W. Bell

H W (Tod) Bell, 46, died yesterday at his home, 603 So. Ohio. He had been in failing health for the past year.

Mr. Bell was born in Neosho Falls and lived there until moving to Iola in 1951. He was a mechanic by trade.

He is survived by his wife of the home; four children, Mrs. Frank Keithly, Richfield; Billy of Wichita; James and Marie Bell of the home; two brothers, Norman of Neosho Falls and Raymond of Sioux City, Neb.; his father, Ralla Bell, Iola; his mother, Mrs. Stella Dodd, Neosho Falls; and one grandson.

Services will be conducted by Elder Robert Vons at 2 p.m. Wednesday in the Waugh Funeral Home. Burial will be at Highland Cemetery.

Lafayette (Lafe) W. Servey, 85, retired lumberman, died this morning at the Moseley Rest Home.

Mr. Servey was born in Iola, the son of a well known pioneer. "Capt." Servey, after completing his schooling here he went to Minnesota and served in the Spanish-American War with the 15th Minn. Vol. Inf. Co. D.

After his discharge, Mr. Servey entered the lumber business and operated a yard for many years in Oklahoma and later in Arkansas City. Following his retirement he returned to Iola to make his home. He was a member of St. timothy's Espiscopal Church, the Masonic Orders and other civil groups.

Mrs. Servey died about 15 years ago and his only surviver is his sister, Mrs, Bernice McNeil, of Independence.

Services will be conducted at 3 p.m. Thursday by the Rev. Thomas Regnary in St. Timothy's Church. Burial will be at the Iola Cemetery. A Requiem Mass will be at 9 a.m. Friday in the church.

Friends report that Mr. Servey, prior to his death that one way to remember him is with gifts to St. Timothy's Church

Note - According to the Allen Co. Cemetery Book, Lafayette W. Servey was born 2-Jul-1873 and died on 20-May-1959 and is buried in the Iola Cemetery

Orin Lilly

Orin Lilly, 73, Moran, died yesterday at the Mercy Hospital in Fort Scott.

Mr. Lilly was born April 28, 1893, at Coropolis, Pennsylvania. On February 19, 1927, he was married to Gladys Cheaney at Panhandle, Texas.

He owned and operated an oil lease west of Moran for 30 years, retiring in 1959. He had been in ill health for the past several years. He was a member of the First Baptist Church in Iola.

He is survived by his widow of the home; one son, Alvin O. Lilly, Iola; two sisters, Mrs. Mary Young, Iola, and Mrs. Florence Jones, Phoenix, one brother Arthur Lilly, Iola, and two grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held Monday at 1:30 p.m. at the Ralston-Hutton Chapel in Moran. The Rev. Roert Means will officiate and burial will be in Moran Cemetery.

Venerable Iolan

Tom Christy dies

Thomas I. Christy, 88, one time chief of police in Iola, died this morning.

Christy, who was born in a log cabin in Geneva Township in 1878, lived at 416 East Lincoln and died this morning at the Sterling Heights Manor.

He lived in Allen County all of his life and worked at the Funston farm and United Iron Works before going to work for the Iola police department in 1909.

In 1914 he was named chief of police and remained in that position until 1926 when he fell victim to city politics and took a two-year stint at other work before returning to the department as chief in 1928. In 1932 another change in city administration interrupted his career again.

The next eight years were spent in various types of employment, including one venture into county politics when he ran for sherrif.

In 1940 Christy was back in uniform again as a special officer at Riverside Park. He served there for some time and then transferred to the street department where he worked in various capacities until retiring for good in 1952.

He was chief of police when the first motocycle was purchased for the department and when the first patrol car, a Model-T Ford, was purchased.

Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Waugh Funeral Home. The Rev. Thomas I. Nyquist will officiate and will be assisted by the Rev. Gayle Hoard. Burial will be in Highland Cemetery.

Christy was the officer named responsible for the arrest and capture of the Maxwell Fleming burglary gang in the 1920s. This group of thugs ranged over a wide area in southeastern Kansas and were involved in 110 burglaries and robberies during their career.

He is survived by three daughters, Hattiebell Christy and Mary Christy, both of Iola, and Mrs. Dan Shoudy, Denver; three sons, James Christy, Iola, Thomas Christy, New York City, and Irvin Christy, Springfield, Missouri; one grandchild and two great-grandchildren.

Mrs. Metta L. Boots

Mrs. Metta L. Boots, 87, 606 West Street, died last night at the Allen County Hospital. Mrs. Boots had made her home with a daughter, Mrs. Houston Butcher, at 606 West Street.

Mrs. Boots was born at Hamilton, Kansas, and lived in the LeRoy-Neosho Falls community before moving to Iola in 1931.

She is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Butcher and Mrs. Roy Davis, Arlington, Texas; one son, Henry Boots, Wichita; six grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Monday at the Waugh Funeral Home. The Rev C.B. Carelton will officiate and burial will be in the Iola Cemetery.

Word has been received here of the death of LeRoy Tippie, a former Colony resident, at his home in Portland, Ore., April 14. Mr. Tippie was born Jan. 10, 1895, at Mapleton and moved to Oregon in 1942. He worked at the Portland Oregonian as a paperhandler until his retirement in 1959.

OBITUARY

Leroy Tippie

Leroy Tippie, a former resident of Colony, Kansas, passed away April 14, at his home in Portland, Oregon. He was born January 10, 1895 in Mapleton, Kansas.

He was married to Beulah May Heinlein March 5, 1919 at the home of her parents, in Colony, Kansas. To this union was born three sons and three daughteres. One son Donald preceded him in death in 1937.

He enlisted into the U.S. Army May 26, 1917. After training he was sent to France where he saw action in one of the worst battles of the war, the Argone Forest. He was discharged January 16, 1919.

Mr. and Mrs. Tippie farmer in Allen County, Kansas, until they moved with their family to Oregon in 1942. He worked at the Portland Oregonian as a paperhandler until his retirement in 1959.

He is survived by his wife, Beulah; two sons, Clarence and Harlan; three daughters, Pauline Eklof, Stella Fedluk and Betty Johnson; all of Portland, Oregon; a sister, Effie Post, Redfield Kansas; a brother, Jess Tippie, Red Deer, Alberta, Canada, 13 grandchildren and 2 foster grandchildren.

Funeral services were held April 18 at 10 a.m. in the Bennett Chapel United Methodist Church. Interment followed in Terrace Lawn Cemetery.

Mrs. Julia Street, a former Moran resident, died Wednesday, April 15, at the Lutheran Hospital in Mesa, Ariz. She was a member of the Central Christian Church and the Mesa Woman's Club, and also still a member of the Morion Chapter OES and Hypatia Rebekah lodges in Moran. Mrs. Street was born in St Louis and came to Moran in 1950 as bride of E.M. (Lige) Street. They moved to Mesa in 1960. Mr. Street died Dec. 2, 1968.

Harold K. Edwards

Harold K. Edwards, 66, Tucson, Arizona, died Saturday in Tucson. Mr. Edwards was a former resident of Iola.

Funeral arrangements - incomplete - will be announced later by the Friskel-Kinser Mortuary. The body will be returned to Iola late today.

Edwards Services

Graveside services for Harold K. Edwards, Tucson, Arizona, who death was reported Monday in The Register, will be held Friday at 2:30 at Highland Cemetery. The Rev. Thomas W. Nyquist will officiate.

Mr. Edwards was born September 28, 1903, at Iola. He married Dorothy Cummings April 21, 1935, and they moved to Wichita in 1943, and to Tucson in 1963.

While living in Iola, Mr. Edwards was employed by the ice plant and the soil conservation office. In Wichita and Tucson he was employed at Boeing Aircraft. He was a member of the North Minster Presbyterian Church in Tucson.

Survivors besides Mrs. Edwards are two sons, Richard Edwards, White Bear Lake, Minnesota and David Edwards, Wichita, and two grandchildren.

Friends may call at the Friskel-Kinser Chapel.

Arnold B. Michael

Arnold B. Michael, 81, 8 1/2 West Jackson, died this morning at the Allen County Hospital.

Mr. Michael was born at Blue Mound, January 4, 1889, and had lived most of his life in Iola. He was a retired LeHigh Portland Cement Company employee.

Mr. Michael server in the Army in World War I and he was a member of the American Legion here. His wife, pearl, died in 1952.

He is survived by a son, Donald Michael, Iola.

funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at the Waugh-Yokum Funeral Home. Burial will be in Highland Cemetery.

Mrs. Dick Gray

Opal Gray, 64, 411 North Oak, died this morning at the Allen County Hospital. Mrs. Gray had been in failing health for the past year.

Mrs. Gray was born at Skidmore, Missouri, December 28, 1905, and she was married to Dick Gray at St. Joseph, Missouri on March 23, 1923. She had lived in Iola most of the time since her marriage.

She was a member of the First Christian Church, Skidmore.

Survivors include her widower of the home, a son, Earl Gray, Coffeyville, two daughters, Mrs. Curtis (Irene) Duggan, Iola, and Mrs. Duane (Dorothy) Beatty, Lyndon; a sister, Mrs. Donald (Mildred) Hart, Skidmore and eight grandchildren.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. tomorrow at the Waugh-Yokum Funeral Home. The Rev. L.L. Robbins will officiate. Burial will be in Highland Cemetery.

Ella Marie Higgins

Ella Marie Higgins, 73, formerly of Kansas City, died this morning at the Pine Crest Nursing Home at Humboldt, where she had been for the past year. She was born February 17, 1897 at Moran. A sister, Mrs. Mildred Matter of Iola, survives.

Funeral arrangements, incomplete at press time, will be announce later by Waugh Yokum Funeral Home.
