Charles Stewart Ayres, of Danville, Kans., is a native of Indiana. He was born on a farm in Switzerland county, Indiana, December 21, 1849, and is a son of Horace M. and Eliza (Humphrey) Ayres. The father was born in Herkimer county, New York, December 30, 1815, and when a child, his parents removed to Indiana, in 1837. He spent his entire life in that State, and died in 1878. Charles Stewart Ayres is one of a family of seven children: Romeyne B., born March 8, 1840, was killed in battle during the Civil War, January 20, 1864; Helen M., born January 20, 1843, died in 1863; Adaline, born October 9, 1849, died February 5, 1850; Charles Stewart, the subject of this sketch; Henry B., born November 11, 1853, now a farmer in Alfalfa county, Oklahoma; James W., born December 26, 1855, died July 6, 1858; and Elizabeth B., born December 30, 1857, died February 20, 1900. Charles Stewart Ayres was educated in the public schools of Indiana, and remained in his native State until 1888, when he came to Kansas, locating in Harper county, where he has since been successfully engaged in farming and stock raising in Chisaskia township. He was married January 24, 1876, to Miss Ruth Tinker, a native of Switzerland county, Indiana, born January 8, 1849. She is a daughter of Henry and Caroline (Campbell) Tinker of Switzerland county, Indiana. To Mr. and Mrs. Ayres have been born two children: Harry Romeyne, born June 22, 1877, married Elizabeth Hollman, April 10, 1905, and they have one child, Ruth, born April 4, 1907; Lucy, the younger child of Mr. and Mrs. Ayres, was born April 21, 1879, married Frank Smith March 20, 1904. Mr. Ayres is a highly respected citizen, and the family is prominent in Harper county.
