Baker, William, lawyer and member of Congress, was born in Washington county, Pa., April 29, 1831. His youth was spent on a farm and he received the schooling common to the country boy of that period. He wished a more liberal education, however, to secure which he entered Wayneshurg College, where he graduated in 1856. For some years he followed teaching as a profession, at the same time reading law, and was admitted to the bar. Mr. Baker decided to go west and located at Lincoln, Kan., where he took an active part in politics. In 1890 he was nominated and elected to Congress by the People's party and re&emul;lected to fill the same office in 1892 and again in 1894. After retiring from Congress he devoted his time to farming and stock raising.
