Cyrus L. Goss, a prominent farmer and stockman of Harper county, now retired, is a native of Indiana. He was born December 16, 1847, on a farm in Jackson county, and is the son of Giles M. and Neatie Goss. Goss was reared on his father's farm in Indiana, and received his early education in the public schools of that State. At the age of twenty-two years, he went to Ringgold county, Iowa, where he was a cowboy for two years. He then bought a farm and followed farming and stock raising there until 1895, when he removed to Kansas and engaged in farming in Harper county until 1907, when he removed to Waldron, Kans., where he has been interested in the cattle business, until recently. Mr. Goss was married April 6, 1876, to Miss Henrietta, daughter of George S. and Nancy E. (Gillham) Whittaker. The father was a native of Tennessee, born October 23, 1829, and died at Keysor, Colo., April 1, 1910. The mother was born March 27, 1828, and died May 18, 1891, at Kellerton, Iowa. They were the parents of eight children: Henrietta, the wife of Cyrus L. Goss, the subject of this review; Eugenia, born November 27, 1853, died April 10, 1855; John N., born October 9, 1855, died July 26, 1911; Anna E., born March 6, 1859; James P., born February 4, 1861; Charles C., born April 2, 1864; Frank Ulysses, born February 8, 1867, died August 1, 1901; and Estella, born July 3, 1870. To Mr. and Mrs. Goss have been born four children: Claude, born February 21, 1877, married Belle Cyphers, August 27, 1898, and they have one child, Lorene, born June 13, 1899; Cora, born December 27, 1879, died March 14, 1880; Floyd Whittaker, born June 17, 1882, died May 25, 1898, and Leo Dare, born November 21, 1885, married Evalene Rose Ash, December 12, 1907, and they have one child, Lawrence Ash, born October 27, 1908. Mr. Goss is a Republican, and has taken an active part in the local organization of his party, but has never sought office. He is a member of the Masonic order, and the family belongs to the Congregational church. Mr. Goss is a public spirited citizen, and is always ready to give his assistance to any worthy enterprise.
