John S. Hixon, county treasurer of Jackson county, is a Kansas pioneer. He is a native of Ohio, born April 20, 1850 and a son of Jacob and Casandra (Stonebraker) Hixon, the former a native of Pennsylvania and the latter of Ohio. The father was a farmer in Ohio until 1857, when he removed to Putman county, Indiana, remaining in that State until 1864, when he came to Kansas. He arrived in Jackson county, September 6th of that year, and located on a farm in Franklin township. John S. Hixon received his education in the public schools, and about the time he reached his majority, engaged in general farming and stock raising in Franklin township, where he remained about thirty years, when he removed to Liberty township, where he followed farming and stock raising until 1903. After an extended trip through the west that year, he returned to Jackson county, locating at Holton, where he engaged in the creamery, poultry and egg business. Mr. Hixon has been a life long Republican, and since coming to Kansas has taken a commendable interest in local politics. While a resident of Franklin township he served three terms as township trustee, and served two terms in that capacity while a resident of Liberty township, and has been a member of the Holton school board. In 1912, he received the Republican nomination for county treasurer and was elected, and is now very acceptably filling that responsible office. He is one of the popular county officers of Jackson county. He was united in marriage April 16, 1871 to Miss Alice, daughter of A. J. and Harriet (Mann) Clarke. Mrs. Hixon is a native of Indiana, having been born in Putnam county, where she was reared and educated. Her parents are natives of Indiana, and among the early pioneers of Kansas. They removed from Putnam to Jackson county in 1870, and located in Grant township, where the father followed farming, principally, although he was a carpenter and worked at his trade some. To Mr. and Mrs. Hixon have been born four children: Charles, a practising dentist at Atchison, Kans.; Lorena married John C. Neeley and now resides at Weiser, Idaho, where her husband is a retired stockman and banker; Ernest H., a mail clerk, Kansas City, Mo. and Edgar died in infancy. Mr. and Mrs. Hixon are members of the Presbyterian church, and he is a member of the Ancient Free and Accepted Masons, and his wife holds membership in the Eastern Star. Mr. Hixon has ever been loyal to the interests of Jackson county, and is ever ready, and willing to support any measure for the betterment of the county and State, which has been his home for half a century.
