Oscar C. Payne, a well known physician and surgeon of Humboldt, Kans. is a native of Illinois. Dr. Payne was born in McDonough County December 10, 1868, and is a son of B. I. and Margaret (Holden) Payne, the former a native of North Carolina and the latter of Illinois. The father was a successful farmer and stock raiser and is now living retired at Wichita, Kans. Dr. Payne was educated in the public schools of Illinois, and the Western Normal College at Bushnell, Ill. After completing school he traveled extensively throughout the United States, and later took a course in Osteopathy and engaged in the practice of that profession at Osawatomie, Kans., where he remained about a year, when he removed to Ottawa, and practiced five years. He then entered Lincoln Medical College, Lincoln, Nebr. where he was graduated in the class of 1903 with the degree of Doctor of Medicine. When he was a junior in medical college he passed the examination of the Kansas State Board of Medical Examiners, and practiced in Montgomery county, Kansas, during the summer of 1902. After completing his medical course in 1903 he located at Humboldt, Kans., where he has since been engaged in the practice of his profession. Dr. Payne has been successful in his chosen field of professional work, and has built up a large practice. He was married July 29, 1897 to Miss Nellie White, daughter of Rev. W. T. and Malissa (Lodge) White, the former a native of Ohio, and the latter of Indiana. Rev. W. T. White was a pioneer Methodist Episcopal minister of Kansas. He came to this State in 1867, and settled at Erie, and was a charter member of the Southeast Kansas Conference. He was active in the ministry until the time of his death in 1911. His wife passed away in 1909. Mrs. Payne was born at Twin Springs, Cherokee county, Kansas, and attended school at various places where her father was located in the ministry. She is a graduate of the Humboldt High School and attended Baird College, Clinton, Mo. To Dr. and Mrs. Payne have been born two children: Arthur and Edwin, students in the Humboldt schools. Dr. Payne is a member of the Ancient Free and Accepted Masons; Independent Order of Odd Fellows; Modern Woodmen of America, and the Knights and Ladies of Security. The family are members of the Methodist Episcopal Church, and Dr. Payne is superintendent of the Sunday school and president of the board of trustees. Mrs. Payne is a member of the Eastern Star.
