George Edward Sterling, assistant cashier of the Hardtner State Bank, is a native son of Kansas. He was born in Barber county, December 3, 1889, and is a son of William James and Nora (Wilhite) Sterling, both natives of Missouri. The father was born on a farm in Sullivan county Missouri, January 1, 1853, his father being a native of Ireland, and his mother of Tennessee. William James Sterling came to Kansas in 1885, locating on government land two miles north and one mile west of where Hardtner now stands. He immediately engaged in farming and stock raising, raising cattle on an extensive scale, in which he was very successful. He now owns and operates 2,100 acres of valuable and well improved land. By hard work and the exercise of good sound business judgment, he has attained a degree of success which compares favorably with any other man in Barber county. Politically he is a Democrat and has taken an active part to advance the policies and principles of his party, but has never sought public office. He is interested in various local enterprises and is president of the Hardtner State Bank. He was united in marriage to Miss Nora Wilhite in 1877, and to this union were born two children: George Edward, whose name introduces this sketch, and Edward Lee, born November 7, 1893 in Barber county, Kansas. He was educated in the public schools of Barber county, and attended commercial college in Wichita, Kans., and is now associated with his father on the farm. George Edward Sterling was educated in the public schools of Barber county, and the Kansas State Agricultural College at Manhattan. He then took a business college course in Wichita, and in 1911 became assistant cashier of the Hardtner State Bank, a position which he has since held.
