Frank R. Zacharias, banker and one of the leading business men of Southern Kansas, is a native of the Keystone State. He was born at Mechanicsburg, Pa., August 30, 1862. His parents, George A. and Mary A. (Riegel) Zacharias, were also natives of Pennsylvania. The father was born in Berks county, and brought up on a farm, and later entered the service of the Pennsylvania Railroad Company in his native State, until 1878, when he came to Kansas, and located on government land in Harper county. He tok[sic] an active part in the public affairs of early times, and was a resident of Harper county but a short time, when he became deputy register of deeds, and in 1880 was elected register of deeds, holding that office four years. In 1884 he retired from active business, and returned to Mechanicsburg, Pa., his former home, where he now resides. He is a Civil war veteran, having served in the United States Signal Service, during the Civil war.

Frank R. Zacharias is one of a family of two children, the younger being E. Gertrude, born in 1864, is unmarried and resides with her parents at Mechanicsburg, Pa. Mr. Zacharias received his education in the public schools of Mechanicsburg, Pa., and came to Kansas in 1879, when seventeen years of age. His first position is this State was deputy register of deeds, under his father. He became an expert accountant, and held various positions of responsibility from time to time, and in 1882 became assistant cashier of a private bank at Harper, and in 1890 was made cashier of The Harper State Bank. This institution was reorganized into a National Bank in 1907, and is now the National Bank of Harper, and at the reorganization, he became its president, and has since been active in directing the policy of that institution. The bank is capitalized at $25,000, and is one of the substantial financial institutions of Southern Kansas. Mr. Zacharias' banking operations is not confined to Harper. He is president of The Danville State Bank of Danvile, Kans., president of the Attica State Bank of Attica, Kans., and also president of the Garfield County Bank of Enid, Okla. He possesses the natural attributes of a successful financier, keen foresight and good judgment, and is considered one of the best posted men on the intricate problems of finance in the State, and by his straight forward methods, has won the confidence of the business world. For three years he was a member of the board of managers of the Kansas State Industrial Reformatory at Hutchinson, during which time he was secretary of that body, but resigned that position during Governor Stanley's administration. He was united in marriage at Hastings, Nebraska, December 10, 1890, to Miss Freda E., daughter of Benjamin Wahlquist, of Hastings, Mrs. Zacharias was born in Iowa. To Mr. and Mrs. Zacharias have been born two children, George Wahlquist, born January 22, 1894, graduated with honors from St. John's Military School, Salina, Kans., in the class of 1913 and is now a student in the Leland Stanford Jr. University, Palo Alto, Calif., and Dorothy, born December 10, 1897, is now a student of Kemper Hall, Kenosha, Wis. Mr. Zacharias is a Knights Templar Mason and a member of the Mystic Shrine. The family are members of the Episcopal church.
