Fred W. Arnhold

FRED W. ARNHOLD, a native of Kansas, is a young man of liberal education and thorough training who has applied himself since reaching his majority to the business of banking, and has since been connected with several well known institutions in the western part of the state. He is now cashier of the Farmers State Bank of Hays.

Mr. Arnhold was born at Victoria, Kansas, October 2, 1891. The Arnholds represent some of the colonies which were established in Western Kansas forty years or so ago from Southeastern Russia, and Fred Arnhold, Sr., father of Fred W., was born at Burgardt, Russia, in 1854, and was educated in that country. In 1874 he came with his mother to the United States and located at Victoria, Kansas, but the mother spent her last years with a son in New Mexico.

Fred Arnhold took up a claim at Victoria, comprising eighty acres, and lived on that about fifteen years. He subsequently bought a quarter section, is still busy with his farming interests and owns 420 acres. He is a democrat and a member of the Catholic Church. Fred Arnhold married Anna Marie Dreiling, born in Herzog, Russia, in 1852, and died at Victoria, Kansas, in 1918. She was the mother of eight children: Anton F., a farmer at Hays; N. F., in the implement business at Hays; Anna, wife of Jacob Walters, living on their farm five miles north of Hays; Jacob F., a farmer at Walker, Kansas; Mary, wife of Richard B. Staab, a farmer at Catherine, Kansas; John F., a farmer at Victoria; Fred W., our subject; and Pauline, who resides with her father at Victoria.

Fred W. Arnhold received his early training in the local schools at Victoria. He also spent one year in the Fort Hays Normal School and in 1911 graduated from the Fort Hays Catholic College. During the following year he worked as a farmer, but in 1912 entered the Citizens State Bank as bookkeeper. In 1913 he was promoted to assistant cashier, and remained with that institution two years. In 1915 he went to Walker, Kansas, as cashier of the Farmers State Bank, but in 1917 returned to Hays and became cashier of the Farmers State Bank.

The Farmers State Bank of Hays was established in 1916. It has a capital of $25,000, surplus and profits of $6,000, and is a growing and prosperous institution. Its president, Jacob Brull, has special mention on other pages. The vice president is John S. Sack.

Mr. Arnhold is a democrat and a member of the Catholic Church. He is a third degree Knight and treasurer of St. Joseph Council No. 1325, Knights of Columbus.

June 15, 1915, at Plainville, Kansas, Mr. Arnhold married Miss Margaret Colahan, daughter of James and Elizabeth (Guerin) Colahan. Her parents live on a farm ten miles northeast of Plainville. Mr. and Mrs. Arnhold have two children: Elizabeth Marie, born June 5, 1916, and Alice Margaret, born June 17, 1918.
