Charles Alfred Beeby

CHARLES ALFRED BEEBY, formerly a well known educator in Western Kansas, now secretary of the Hays Chamber of Commerce, has been a factor in business affairs at Hays for several years.

A native Kansan, he was born at Hill City July 11, 1878. His grandfather, David Beerby,[sic] was born in England in 1825 and on coming to America settled in Indiana, where he followed farming. He died at Frankfort, Indiana, in 1862. W. A. Beeby, father of Charles Alfred, was born at Indianapolis in 1857, grew up there and in early manhood came west and was a pioneer homesteader of 160 acres in Graham County, Kansas. His alfalfa farm near Hill City is highly developed, and comprises 160 acres and he still owns and occupies that place. He is a democrat and a member of the Christian Church.

W. A. Beeby married Flora E. Flynn, who was born near Frankfort, Indiana, in 1862. Their children are: Charles A.; Alice, a graduate of the Fort Hays Normal School with the degree Bachelor of Science, and now superintendent of schools at Palco, Kansas; A. E. Beeby, who has a distinguished record on the Kansas roll of honor, serving in France as a private in a machine gun battalion and in one of the recent drives leaving the trenches to bring in a wounded marine under heavy shell fire and getting three bullets through his clothes and for which instance of courage and gallantry he was cited in the general orders for bravery; Elizabeth, wife of John Sidfrid, a farmer in Caddo, Colorado; Daisy, David and Irene, all attending school at Hays.

Charles A. Beeby was educated in the rural schools of Graham County, and in 1916 graduated from the Fort Hays Normal School. He taught school in that county for nine years, being county superintendent two terms and for a year and a half was principal of the Morland schools. In 1916 he engaged in the insurance and abstract business at Hays, but gave up that business in 1918 to give all his attention to his present duties as secretary of the Chamber of Commerce. He owns 160 acre farm in Graham County.

Mr. Beeby is a democrat and a member of the Catholic Church. He is a third degree Knight, member of St. Joseph Council No. 1320, and district deputy of Ninth District, Knights of Columbus. He is also affiliated with the Royal Neighbors, Hays Camp, Modern Woodmen of America and the Ancient Order United Workmen.

In 1913, at Hays, Mr. Beeby married Miss Mary McCarthy, daughter of Daniel and Johanna McCarthy, who live at Hays. Her father is a farmer. Mr. and Mrs. Beeby have two children: Charlotte, born July 2, 1914, and Charles A., Jr., born January 30, 1918.
