Noah L. Book

NOAH L. BOOK, M. D. A well-thought-of physician and surgeon, whose work has been greatly appreciated in the community of Stockton, where he has practiced for fifteen years or more, Doctor Book came to manhood on a Kansas farm, was a school teacher several years, and largely through his own earnings and energies paid for and acquired a thorough professional training.

Doctor Book's paternal ancestors have been in America from the time of earliest colonial settlement. He was born in Lebanon County, Pennsylvania, April 28, 1868, son of Elias H. Book. The latter was born in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, in 1828. He spent many years in Pennsylvania as a farmer and in March, 1880, brought his family to Kansas and settled on a farm near Abilene. He lived there until his death in June, 1911. Elias Book was all his life a devout member of the River Brethren Church, and was faithful to his religious duties in every community where he lived. He was a republican voter. He married Elizabeth Lindiman. She was born in Pennsylvania in 1829 and died at Abilene, Kansas, in 1906. Their large family of children are briefly noted as follows: Mary, living at Caldwell, Kansas, widow of Daniel Grove, who was a farmer in Oklahoma; Annie, wife of Cyrus Herr, of Annville, Pennsylvania; David, who died at the age of twenty-one years; Elias, of Ashland, Ohio; Henry, owner of a butcher shop at Talmage, Kansas; Isaac, also a resident of Talmage; Jacob, who died at the age of thirteen years; John, a farmer at Talmage, Kansas; Dr. Noah L.; Lizzie, who died at the age of twenty-six years.

Dr. Noah L. Book was twelve years old when his parents came to Kansas and he grew up in Dickinson County. He finished his literary education in Campbell University at Holton, Kansas. For four years he was a teacher in Dickinson County, and then spent one year in the Dickinson County High School at Chapman as a student and took his first year of medical training at Lawrence in the University of Kansas, Medical Department. Another two years were spent at Ann Arbor, Michigan, in the Medical School of the University of Michigan. Doctor Book received his Doctor of Medicine degree in Rush Medical College in Chicago in 1901. The following year he practiced at Sylvan Grove, Kansas, and in 1902 moved to his permanent home in Stockton, where he has been greatly prospered in his professional work. His offices are in the Stockton National Bank Building. He has served as county health officer and city health officer three years, and is active in all community matters. He was formerly a member of the County and State Medical societies. Doctor Book is a republican, is past master of Newahcuba Lodge No. 189, Ancient Free and Accepted Masons, and is also affiliated with Solomon Valley Chapter No. 81, Royal Arch Masons, Phillipsburg Commandery, Knights Templar, and Isis Temple of the Mystic Shrine at Salina. He belongs to Stockton Camp, Modern Woodmen of America. Doctor Book is interested in farming as the owner of 641 acres in Rooks County. He also owns a good home in Stockton.

In 1902, at Abilene, he married Miss Grace Stewart, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John M. Stewart, the latter deceased and the former a retired resident of Abilene. Doctor and Mrs. Book have four children: Thelma, born October 27, 1903; Lawrence, born March 12, 1905; Margaret, born October 1, 1906, and Gordon, born September 28, 1911.
