John J. Dreiling

JOHN J. DREILING has been an active figure in Ellis County circles for a number of years, was one of the county officials two terms, and is now giving all his time to banking. He is cashier of the Farmers State Bank at Walker, one of the chain of prosperous banking institutions headed by the well known capitalist C. G. Cochran.

Mr. Dreiling was born at Victoria, Kansas, November 25, 1885. His father, J. S. Dreiling, was born in Herzog, Russia, in 1856, and on coming to the United States at the age of nineteen settled at Victoria, where many of his fellow countrymen lived. He homesteaded 160 acres there, but later sold that and since 1892 has been one of the active merchants of Victoria. While a farmer, the senior Dreiling served as trustee of Herzog Township in Ellis County and for ten terms was a member of the school board. He is a democrat and a Catholic. J. S. Dreiling married Margaret Windholz, who was born at Herzog, Russia, in 1858. They are the parents of six children: Pauline, wife of Peter Rohleder, a farmer near Victoria; John J., of this sketch; Andrew J., cashier of the First National Bank of Victoria; Clara, wife of Raymond Karlin, a farmer at Catherine, Kansas; Joseph, who is studying for the profession of dentistry at St. Louis University and now a member of the hospital corps in the United States army; and Sophia, still at home with her parents.

John J. Dreiling attended the parochial and public schools of Victoria. He finished his literary education in St. Francis College at Quincy, Illinois, where he graduated in 1907. Returning to Ellis County, his popularity soon brought him official honors and in the fall of 1910 he was elected clerk of the District Court and by re-election in 1912 he served four years. On leaving the court house he became bookkeeper in the First National Bank of Hays, where he spent 1 1/2 years, and for four months was assistant postmaster at Hays. In October, 1917, he took up his present duties as cashier of the Farmers State Bank of Walker.

The Farmers State Bank was established August 13, 1915, and C. G. Cochran is its president and A. F. Cochran its vice president. The bank is capitalized at $15,000 and has surplus and profits of $2,800. Mr. Dreiling is a democrat, a member of the Catholic Church and is a third degree Knight in St. Joseph's Council No. 1325, Knights of Columbus, at Hays.

In 1910, at Victoria, he married Miss Lucy Von Lintel, daughter of Henry and Teckla Von Lintel, farming people of Victoria, where her mother is still living. Her father died in 1900. Mr. and Mrs. Dreiling have four children: Edwin, born in 1911; Linus, born in 1912; Elmer, born in 1913; and Celesta, born January 9, 1918.
