A. W. Fellers

A. W. FELLERS has been the leading merchant at Mullinville for several years, and has built up one of the best appointed and equipped stores in Kiowa County.

He was born at Beatrice, Nebraska, January 21, 1885, but has lived practically all his life in this part of Kansas. His paternal ancestors came from England shortly after the Revolutionary war and were pioneer settlers in Ohio. His grandfather, Andrew F. Fellers, was born in Ohio in 1820 and for many years was engaged in farming in Putnam County of that state. He served as a soldier in the Union army and died in Putnam County, Ohio, in 1901. He married Miss Bergman, also a native of Ohio.

J. P. Fellers, father of the Mullinville merchant, was born in Putnam County, Ohio, in 1859, grew up and married in his native state, and was a teacher there. In 1884 he located at Beatrice, Nebraska, where for one year he farmed. In 1885 he moved to Hays City, Kansas, and was a teacher in that locality for a number of years. In 1903 he moved to Mullinville, where he is now living retired. He is a republican, an active member and official of the United Brethren Church, and is affiliated with the Ancient Order of United Workmen. J. P. Fellers married Emma A. Snyder. She was born in Putnam County, Ohio, in 1857. They have four children: F. R. Fellers, a farmer at Kismet, Kansas; A. W. Fellers; Iona, wife of L. E. Warden, a farmer at Kismet; and Archie, who enlisted in 1917 at the beginning of the war with Germany as a first class private, and was on the battlefront in France when the war closed.

Mr. A. W. Fellers finished his education in the public schools of Mullinville, and at the age of twenty-one started out to make his own way in the world. For one year he taught school in Kiowa County, and he learned the mercantile business as an employe in a store at Mullinville. In 1911 he bought the largest general store in that town and has been its proprietor for the past eight years and has a business of which he may well be proud. He also owns a modern home which he built in 1916.

Mr. Fellers is a republican and is a member of the Town Council of Mullinville, and a justice of the peace. He is a member of the United Brethren Church and is affiliated with Mullinville Lodge, Independent Order of Odd Fellows, local camp of the Modern Woodmen of America and the Kansas Fraternal Citizen.

In 1908, at Mullinville, he married Miss Sadie Morris, daughter of J. W. and Ellen (Armstrong) Morris. Her parents live at Mullinville, her father being one of the early day farmers in this locality. Mr. and Mrs. Fellers have three children: Francis, born July 14, 1909; Helen Ruth, born March 6, 1911; and Maida Fern, born March 11, 1913.
