H. C. Nielson

H. C. NIELSON for a number of years has figured as a business man in Osborne County, and has just finished his second term as clerk of the District Court.

Mr. Nielson was born in Troy, Kansas, June 28, 1874. His father is Nels Nielson, a retired resident of Marshall County, Kansas. Born in Denmark in 1844, he grew up there and became a brick mason, a trade he afterwards followed for a number of years in Kansas in connection with farming. He first came to the United States at the age of seventeen in 1861, and lived in Minnesota for a time. He went back to Denmark to claim his bride, and altogether has made four visits back to his native land. Immediately after the Civil war he located at Atchison, Kansas, followed his trade there, and then moved to Troy, where he was manager of the McCrum Elevator and Milling Company. In 1877 he went on his farm south of Troy, and in 1885 went to Marshall County, where he has spent over thirty years as a farmer and stockraiser. He is a democrat and for many years served as trustee of Walnut Township. He is a member of the Danish Lutheran Church. Nels Nielson married Dorothy Christianson, a native of Denmark. She died in Marshall County, Kansas. H. C. Nielson is the eldest of their children. Lawrence died at the age of fourteen; James M. is a farmer and stockraiser in Marshall County; William S. is a contractor at Los Angeles, California; Emma is the wife of Glenn Libers, a farmer of Lyons, Nebraska; and Kate is the wife of Andrew Peterson, a Marshall County farmer.

H. C. Nielson spent most of his early life on his father's farm in Marshall County. There he attended the rural schools and in 1897 graduated from the Modern Normal College at Marysville, Kansas. He is well known in Marshall County, where he taught school four years, and farmed for three years. Since 1904 he has been a resident of Osborne and conducted a successful produce and cream business until 1914. In that year he was elected clerk of the district court and was re-elected in 1916. Mr. Nielson owns a good home in Osborne. He is a democrat and he and Sheriff Bryant were first of that party to be elected to office in Osborne County. Mr. Nielson is a member of the Congregational Church, and is affiliated with Osborne Lodge of Masons, Osborne Chapter, Royal Arch Masons, Doric Council, Royal and Select Masters, of which he is recorder, and Osborne Lodge, Independent Order of Odd Fellows, and Osborne Camp, Modern Woodmen of America.

August 23, 1899, in Marshall County, he married Miss Ada Shroyer, daughter of Hiram and Lillie Shroyer, now living at Marysville, Kansas. Her father is a retired farmer and came to Kansas a great many years ago. Mr. and Mrs. Nielson have two children: Olive, born December 29, 1900, a senior in the Osborne High School; and Genara, boon September 4, 1902, in the junior class of the local high school.
