Walter E. Pangburn

WALTER E. PANGBURN, whose enterprise as a merchant of Luray, gives him an enviable standing throughout Russell and Osborne counties, is one of the few men forty years of age who can claim Western Kansas as his native soil; due to the fact that his father, L. A. Pangburn, elsewhere referred to in this publication, was one of the first settlers to homestead in Russell County.

On his father's homestead in what was then Fair View Township but now Waldo Township of Russell County, Walter E. Pangburn was born August 27, 1877. Besides the public schools of Waldo he had the literary advantages of the State Agricultural College at Manhattan, being a student in that great school four years. He left Manhattan in the spring of 1900 and for several years following clerked in the store of Gail Wilson at Waldo. In November, 1904, he and William Meeker bought the Wilson store and continued in partnership for seven years. Mr. Pangburn then sold his interest to Mr. Meeker and in 1912 moved to Luray, Kansas, where he bought a fully equipped department store. He has since conducted it on a new and enlarged scale, and it is in every way the largest store of its kind in that part of Russell and Osborne counties.

Mr. Pangburn is a stockholder in the First National Bank of Luray. He is independent in politics and fraternally is affiliated with Luray Lodge, Ancient Free and Accepted Masons, Salina Consistory No. 3 of the Scottish Rite, and Luray Camp of the Modern Woodmen of America. In April, 1905, at Lucas, Kansas, he married Miss Anna O'Brien, daughter of Thomas and Susan (Carvel) O'Brien. Her mother is living at Denver, Colorado, and her father was a farmer and is now deceased. Mr. and Mrs. Pangburn have a son, Clifton W., born June 6, 1912.
