Jay L. Smith
JAY L. SMITH M. D. With the interest and enthusiasm of youth and the thorough training of the most advanced in his profession, Jay L. Smith has made rapid progress in his career as a physician and surgeon at Norcatur, where he has practiced over three years.
Doctor Smith was born in Chicago, Illinois, September 3, 1890. His father is also a physician, Dr. W. H. Smith, now living at Kansas City, Kansas, where he has practiced steadily for twenty years. He was born in Pennsylvania in 1860, was reared in his native state and married in Illinois, and graduated from the Chicago College of Physician and Surgeons. He practiced five years in Chicago, and then moved to Kansas City, Kansas. He is an independent voter, affiliated with the Independent Order of Odd Fellows and is a member of the Christian Church. Dr. W. H. Smith married Etta J. Trotter, who was born in Illinois in 1864. They have two sons, Don L. and Jay L. Don L. is also a physician and surgeon, making three members of the family members of that profession. He graduated from the University Medical College at Kansas City, Missouri, and is in practice at Wilsonville, Nebraska.
Dr. Jay L. Smith attended public schools at Kansas City, Kansas, graduating from high school in 1908. The following year he spent in the University of Kansas at Lawrence and from 1909 to 1913 was a student in the University Medical College at Kansas City, Missouri. He finished his course and was awarded the Doctor of Medicine degre[sic] in 1913. During that year he also served as interne in St. Joseph's Hospital at Kansas City, Missouri. For two years he practiced in Kansas City, Kansas, and thus he was fortified by experience and complete training when he moved to Norcatur in the fall of 1915. He has a general medical and surgical practice. Doctor Smith is a member of the Wyandotte County and State Medical Societies, and is affiliated with the Alpha Kappa Kappa college fraternity. He is also a member of Norcatur Lodge of Masons and Norcatur Camp, Modern Woodmen of America. In politics he votes independently and is a member of the Christian Church. Mr. Smith owns a residence at Kansas City, Kansas.
In 1915, at Kansas City, Missouri, he married Miss Laura Edith Odell, daughter of Edward Isaac and Laura Odell. Her parents live in Kansas City, Missouri, her father being superintendent of a grain elevator company. Doctor and Mrs. Smith have one son, Jay L., Jr., born September 11, 1917.
