The Mission has been owned by the Kansas Historical Society since 1927, and was designated a National Historical Site in 1968. A plaque at the entrance of the cemetery states the following: "Rev. Thomas Johnson, a missionary of the Methodist Episcopal Church and Founder of the Shawnee Mission; Rev. William Johnson, Missionary to the Kansa Indians, and members of their families were buried here from 1839 to 1930. Plaque furnished by the Old Mission United Methodist Church 1988." Transcriber's Note: This is a complete transcription by reading and photographing the gravestones. Cemetery Condition: This cemetery is well maintained. Many of the oldest stones are practically illegible, and some of the footstones are broken or missing. About the Cemetery: This cemetery contains the remains of Rev. Thomas Johnson, who this county is named for. With him is his wife, his brother Rev. William Johnson, and several Johnson babies. Also interred here are two adult children of Thomas Johnson. His daughter Sarah married John Bristow Wornall, a Kansas City, MO historical figure who owned the farm to the east of the Shawnee Reservation and Mission. Sarah Johnson Wornall gave birth to 7 children, but only two lived past childhood. The other 5 children are buried here with Sarah, who died shortly after the birth of her 7th child. Also interred here is Sarah Berryhill, the wife of Rev. Jerome C Berryhill, another Mission teacher.
