Obituary of ABIJAH "BIGE"ALLOWAY |
Abijah Alloway, familiarly known as "Bige". pioneer farmer of this community,
passed away at the home of his nephew in Altamont Wednesday afternoon, Feb. 10
at 1:25. He had been in poor health for some time but was able, however, to be
up and around until a few days before his death. He had made a trip to the Mayo
Hospital in Rochester, Minn., several years ago in an effort to combat chronic
trouble. One of the best known of the older generation of farmers in this community, "Bige" had a large host of friends. A confirmed old bachelor who lived alone he kept the home as neat as any housewife could and was precise and methodically careful in all of his farming operations. He owned one of the best farms in this community, being the only farm inside the Deming levee, besides the Deming ranch. Funeral services will be held this afternoon (Friday) at 2:00 o'clock at the McAuley Funeral Home conducted by Rev. V. F. Cloninger of the Baptist Church. Interment being the Oswego cemetery. "Bige" was the last of a family of three sisters and two brothers. His brother, Jay also a prosperous farmer of this community, having died some four years ago, and a sister died just a year ago on the same day. He leaves to mourn his loss the following nephews and nieces of this community: Hugh Alloway of Coffeyville; Howard Alloway of Altamont and Clarence and Clifford Alloway of Route 4 Oswego; and Mrs W. Fouts. Other nephews and nieces are Mrs Oscar Price of Lewisburg, Kansas, H. A. Martin of Wichita and N. A. Martin of Garden City. Mr. Alloway was born in Newton Iowa, April 8, 1859, and came to Kansas with his parents in 1868, where he lived on the same farm ever since. |
