Mrs. David H. Bender
Mary Elizabeth, daughter of Henry and Marie Elizabeth Dietz, nee Michaelis, was born May 12, 1893 at Kratzka, Russia. She departed this life on November 1, 1962 at the City Hospital, Russell, Kansas. Her age was 69 years, 5 months and 20 days.

In 1902 she came with her parents to America and Russell County to become a resident of this community until her death. She attended rural school, was confirmed and on November 9, 1911, she was united in marriage to David H. Bender at the Bender Hill Church. She remained a faithful member of this Lutheran Church until her death.

There were six children born to this marriage, all of whom survive her. With her husband they engaged in farming in the Bender Hill Community for many years and were a part in the growth and development of this community in church, civic and social affairs.

In 1947 they retired from active farm life and moved to Russell to establish their home at 857 East Third Street. Here she also held the esteem and respect of her neighbors, and friends by her cheerful disposition and willingness to lend a hand whenever it was needed she became ill about 6 months ago during which time she was hospitalized and underwent surgery. However a malignancy developed and medical skill and nursing care were of no avail and with her family at her bedside she peacefully passed away Thursday evening at 9 p.m.

Bender, Great Bend; Ruben Bender, Russell; Mrs. Paul (Hilda) Dietz, Russell, and Linda Bender, Salina.
