Obituary of MARVIN JACOB BECKER

Marvin J. Becker, 58, 115 W. 15th St., died suddenly Wednesday morning ( 19 January 1983) at the Russell Hospital after becoming ill at his home in the early morning hours. Death was believed to have been caused by a heart attack.

Born Dec. 16, 1924, at Milberger, he was a life-long resident of the area. He and his family moved from a farm near Galatia to Russell in December, 1972.

A graduate of Russell High School in 1942, he attended St. John's College in Winfield before returning to his home to farm. He had been active in grain and livestock operations with his brother, LaVern. In recent months, the brothers have separated their agricultural operations but they still own farm acreage in a partnership.

Mr. Becker was married to the former Marlene E. Karst, Aug. 18, 1946, in the Immanuel Lutheran Church, Milberger. She survives. Other survivors are three sons, Stephen and Michael of Russell, and Paul, Sayre, Okla; two daughters, Anita Botka, Las Vegas, Nev., and Laura, Russell; his mother, Mrs. Bertha Becker, Russell; brother, LaVern, Milberger; sister, Mrs. Elaine Earlywine, LaPorte, Ind.; and four grandchildren.

A member of the United Emmanuel Lutheran Church, Milberger, he was a veteran of World War II and a member of the American Legion. Tuesday, Jan. 18, marked the final day of his term on the state Extension Service Advisory Council. He was recognized for his years of service in an area extension service meeting at Hays.

A former Soil Conservation Service county committeeman of Barton County, Mr. Becker was active in a number of agricultural interests and events. He was a member of the Russell County extension service committee for several years. He was a director of First of Kansas Savings Association, and was associated in oil development in the area. He was a past director and past president of the Galatia Farmers Cooperative Association.

When he and his brother had joint agricultural ventures, they operated under the name of L and M Farms.
The funeral service is at 2 p.m. Friday, Jan. 21, in the Emmanuel Lutheran Church, Milberger, with the Rev. Robert Kreier officiating. Burial will be in the Milberger Cemetery. Pohlman's Mortuary, Russell, is in charge of arrangements.

A memorial in his name has been established with the United Emmanuel Lutheran Church Men's Vespers Program. Gifts may be left at the church or the mortuary.
