Obituary of CHRISTINA SHRIWISE

CHRISTINA SHRIWISE (Died on 30 November 1973)
Mrs. Christina Shriwise was born in 1885 in Norga, Russia. In 1886 she came to the Great Bend area. Her parents moved to the Bison area the same year. She lived in the Bison area until she was 21 years of age, when she went to Hoisington and worked for the father and grandfather of Beth (Southwick) Borger. While working here she met and married John Shriwise of Hoisington in 1908.

They had a farm on the north edge of town where they did general farming and Mrs. Shriwise milked cows and raised chickens besides helping with all other farm work. She sold milk and some eggs to the old Hoisington Hospital until 1938. This income helped to supplement the farm income during reverses on the farm.

Mr. Shriwise died in 1934. They had no children, but Mrs. Shriwise was an influential person in many people's lives and particularly in the lives of many of the 24 nieces and nephews living from Michigan to Washington State and from Montana to Texas.

She was active in farm organizations her entire life. The highlight was being a delegate from Kansas to the international convention of the Associated Country Women of the World held in Copenhagen, Denmark, in 1950.

She was active in the local and other Methodist churches where she was an inspiration to many young people when she taught Sunday School for many years. Later in life she contributed substantially to a number of Methodist colleges in Kansas.

She retired from active life in 1961 and moved to Frazer Meadows Manor, a senior citizens' home in Boulder, Colo., where she lived and did extensive traveling. In June of 1973 she returned to Kansas and the Methodist home in Newton. Since that time she spent most of the time visiting friends and relatives until she entered the hospital in Hoisington, and died Nov. 30.
