Can anyone tell me who named the town and why. Just what can anyone tell me about this place. ------------------------------------ RANEY...STONE Susan Lynn Chase (suschase@hotmail.com) 20 October 1999 My Grandmother was Lucy Ethel RANEY, born 3 April 1901 in Stanton County to Grant RANEY and Ida Belle GRAY. Her parents were William F. GRAY and Julie A. BRIM. Grant's parents were James RANEY, born 8 June 1820 in Indiana, he was married on 31 July 1842 to Sarah Ann CORDRY who's birthdate is 2 June 1822 in Kentucky. I have family groups including the STONE family all the way back to 1820. Would love to have photocopies of photo's if any are available. ------------------------------------ SLOAN Sharon Sloan (SandiaSEM7@aol.com) 20 October 1999 Searching for any information on George David SLOAN, my Great-Grandfather. He had gone to western Kansas where he freighted with a mule train, hauling supplies to the soldiers for the government from Wichita, Dodge City and Coldwell to Ft. Reno and Ft. Sill in the Indian Territory. We had always heard he ran supplies for Custer's Army. He went to Stanton County Kansas, taking up a homestead and was elected sheriff of Stanton County for three terms. They then moved to the Indian Territory, when the strip was thrown open for settlement, residing at Byron, Oklahoma for several years being fond of frontier life. In 1902 he took his family by cover wagon to Makeroff, Manitoba, Canada. So although I know when my Great-Grandfather went to Kansas in 1881, I don't know what years he was sheriff. I would like to verify all of this and wonder if there's a way to do it. ------------------------------------ THORPE Everett Thorpe Jr (EThorpeJr@aol.com) 20 October 1999 Query: Seeking information on any THORPE's in Stanton County, specifically Everett THORPE (Sr), my father. He was born around 1887 and eventually migrated to New York, date and reasons unknown. Information verifying dates of birth, deaths, marriages, etc., would be helpful. Thank you. ------------------------------------ ROBERTS Laurie Roberts (marktog@idirect.com) 05 July 1999 My Grandparents, Mayhew Tristam & Gertrude Amanda ROBERTS, left NH after the 1900 Census was taken, although our word of mouth records indicates that one of my Uncles was born in Johnson, Kansas and the Census shows he was born in New Hampshire. They had eight children....Harold Franklin, born Aug 1894--died Feb 1895; Roland Prentice, born March 03, 1896--died July 25, 1979; Evlin Leola, born Nov 19, 1896--died March 1889; Cilfton Russell, born Dec 13, 1899--died March 03, 1971; Lydia Jane Madoline born Oct 08, 1901--died April 14, 1976; Simion George, born Oct 30, 1903--died July 17, 1906; Herbert William, born Nov 10, 1905-- died March 1906; Gertrude Elizabeth, born Feb 05, 1908--died Nov 14, 1971. Except for the hand-me down information I have not been able to find out anything about the 6-7 years stay in Kansas. We originally thought that they would be farmers, My Aunt who is now 90, mentioned that my Grandfather made stoves? And there seems to be some reference that he may have been a Shoemaker. She also mentioned that school did not start at least in Alberta until they were 7 or 8 years old. My oldest Uncle was born in 1896, so if they left Kansas in 1908, he would have been 12 which means he should have been going to school somewhere?? Please any help would be grateful. ------------------------------------ RANDALL Rebecca Anderson (rebbeca55@email.com) 26 June 1999 I am looking for any information on William Homer RANDALL and Mary RANDALL, who were residents of Manter, Stanton County, Kansas in the late 1800's and early 1900's.
