Between the period 1938 to 1946, more than 9 million Americans enlisted in the United States Army. Over 62,000 of those brave men and women were from Kansas. The National Archives and Records Administration has made available the database of Army Serial Number Enlistment Card Records on-line at http://www.archives.gov. These records are contained within two files. The official cites are:

Electronic Army Serial Number Merged File, ca. 1938 - 1946 [Electronic Records]; Data Table: ENLISTMENT RECORDS; Record Group 64: Records of the National Archives and Records Administration; Series: World War II Army Enlistment Records, 6/1/2002 - 9/30/2002. (Online version on July 16, 2005 at http://www.archives.gov/aad/index.html.)

Electronic Army Serial Number Merged File, ca. 1938 - 1946 [Electronic Records]; Data Table: RESERVE CORPS RECORDS; Record Group 64: Records of the National Archives and Records Administration; Series: World War II Army Enlistment Records, 6/1/2002 - 9/30/2002. (Online version on July 16, 2005 at http://www.archives.gov/aad/index.html.)

Unfortunately, the files could not be merged because they contain different information. Be sure to check both the ER (Enlistement Records) file and the RC (Reserve Corps) file when searching for your name.

According to the NARA website, these files have known limitations.

  • First, the scanning of these files has about a 35% error rate. That is a very high error rate, but NARA felt the errors were minor enough that the reader could intuitively correct for it. Only 4.7% of the errors were contained in the Name column and only 1.3% were in the Serial Number column. Therefore, we feel the data has genealogical value and is worth presenting. Keep these errors in mind when searching for your ancestor's name. Account for possible missing or mis-scanned letters. For example, the surname "Weaver" may have been scanned as " eaver" or the surname "Nance" may have been scanned as "Mance."
  • Second, the records are incomplete. About 13 percent, or about 1.5 million cards nationally, have not been scanned. The total file contains over 9 million records so, again, we felt the data has sufficient value to present. We could not determine whether these remaining 1.5 million cards will eventually be added to the database or whether they are damaged or in some other way unable to be scanned. If we find they have been added in the future, we will add them to this listing.

Military service records for World War II veterans are not on-line. NARA's National Personnel Records Center (NPRC) in St. Louis is the depository for military service records for most personnel discharged since the early 20th century from the U.S. Air Force, Army, Marine Corps, Navy and Coast Guard. A 1973 fire at the St. Louis center damaged or destroyed many pre-1964 Air Force and pre-1960 Army records.

A veteran or next-of-kin of a deceased veteran may order copies electronically from NPRC through http://vetrecs.archives.gov. All requestors should visit the NPRC website at http://www.archives.gov/facilities/mo/st_louis/military_personnel_records.html for information about accessing military service records and other related information.
