CHASE COUNTY NATIONAL BANK
The first banking institution opened for business in Cottonwood Falls was a private bank, "The
Chase County Bank of N.J. Swayze," opened July,
1873. Mr. Swayze was born in Canada. In 1871 he
located in Cottonwood Falls and engaged in the
lumber business, which he sold to his partner,
W.C. Edwards, when he started the bank.
The Chase County National Bank opened for
business Aug. 28, 1882, with a capital of $50,000.
Officers were: A.S. Howard, President; J.D. Min
nick, Vice-President; W.H. Holsinger, Cashier.
Mr. Holsinger soon resigned when W.S. Sanders was
chosen cashier. Directors were: Arch Miller, Chas.
W. Rogler, Wm. Jeffrey, J.D. Minnick, Francis Bernard, Samuel Baker, J.R. Blackshere, A.J. Crocker,
and A.S. Howard; and, among later directors were
Henry Brandley and George Drummond.
After a good record for more than firty years,
the Bank closed its doors in February, 1928. It
paid its depositors in full the week of June 19,
1929, the stockholders taking care of all loss.

THE EXCHANGE NATIONAL BANK
The Exchange National Bank originated as the
"State Exchange Bank of Cottonwood Falls." It was
originated May 8, 1891, and was located on the
east side of Broadway. The Capital stock was
$27,140.00. The officers were: J.M. Tuttle, president; E.W. Tanner, Vice-President; and O.L. Hurlburt, cashier. The directors were O.F. Hurlburt,
O.L. Hurlburt, S.S. Porter, St. Louis; W.H. Holsinger and J.S. Doolittle, Cottonwood Falls. In 1899 the
Bank dropped the "Cottonwood Falls" from the
name, and became the "State Exchange Bank.''
In January, 1903, it was converted into a National Bank with a capital of $50,000.00, and with
the name "Exchange National Bank." The officers
and directors at that time were: H.F. Gillette, president; W.A. Morgan, A.M. Breese, C.A. Cowley,
Elmer Johnston, James Drummond, and L.M. Swope.
In 1906 the capital stock was increased to $75,000.
At that time the bank was located one door north
of its present location. In 1907, the corner building, where it is now located, was purchased from
E.D. Replogle who had been operating a Drug Store
there. The Bank remodeled the building and has
since been at this location, the corner of Friend
and Broadway.
On October 27, 1919, George McNee, president,
and Lee M. Swope, cashier, sold their stock to
Dudley Doolittle, as both McNee and Swope were
moving to California. On January 1, 1920, Fred
Siler was elected to the presidency to replace
George McNee.
In 1946, officers of the Bank were: W. Roy
Mushrush, president; F.L. Grimwood, cashier; and
directors, Carl B. Cowley, Dudley Doolittle, R.Z.
Blackburn, G.W. Miller, F.G. Siler, and Frank Bell.
Present officers and directors are: Robert Mushrush,
president; Tom Bell, cashier; Roy Mushrush, chairman of the Board of Directors; Jim Bell Jr., Wayne
Rogler, Evan Koger, and F.L. Grimwood.
