Herring/McNaughton Families

Herring/McNaughton Families and Westward Migration

This story begins in Western Pennsylvania. In 1800 in Bald Eagle, Centre County, Pennsylvania where Alexander McNaughton and his wife Jennet Watson are found with sons Samuel, James, Daniel Alexander, and John, and a daughter Jennet.

In 1810 the family is found in Venango County, Franklin Township, Pennsylvania. Samuel has married and a daughter Margaret Ann has been added to the family. Before 1820 the McNaughton family moved to Richland Township area of Venango County, Pennsylvania which became part of Clarion County in 1839. This area is now known as Helen, named after Alexander a Scottish Highlander. The name comes from the Scottish dialect Heiland and is often mispronounced as the female name instead of as with a long e.

On the 1820 Census there are 20 family members residing. This would include Alexander and Jennet, Son James and wife Barbara McNaughton, son John and wife Elizabeth McNaughton. Barbara and Elizabeth are sisters. Daniel Alexander McNaughton and his wife Hannah Criswell are also residing here.

In 1820 Lewis Herring, Jr. and his wife Eleanor Armstrong are found in Plum Township, Venango County, Pennsylvania. Here, daughter Mary Ann and sons Joseph, Lewis and Daniel were born. Later that year about 1820, Sophia Herring was born.

Lewis and Eleanor were still here in Plum Township, Venango County, Pennsylvania in 1830 but moved to Jefferson County, Barnett Township, Pennsylvania about 1837 where son William was born.

In 1850 Lewis and Eleanor are still in Barnett Township, Pennsylvania. Son Joseph is with them, but also found with him, is his wife, Elizabeth McNaughton, daughter of John and Elizabeth (Brenneman) McNaughton.

Mary Ann Herring had married Daniel Cook son of John P. Cook and Susannah Helpman before 1840. In 1850 they are residing in Elk Township, Clarion County, Pennsylvania.

Sophia Herring married William Maze. William son of John Hamilton Maze and Sarah Wolf. They were married about 1842 Barnett Township, Jefferson County, Pennsylvania. Their children were: Sarah born 1843. Stephen Maze Born March 1844. Female Maze born November 1849. James L. Maze, Born about 1852. Sophia died 1855.

The following children were born to Joseph and Elizabeth in Barnett Township, Pennyslvania: David, Mary E., Louisa Malinda, and Lewis H. Sometime during 1858 The Herring families began the migration west. In 1860 the Lewis Herring Family, John Gordon and Barbara McNaughton, Daniel Cook and Mary Ann Herring are found in Caledonia, Houston County, Minnesota. Olive Alice Herring daughter of Joseph and Elizabeth was born there January 1859. Jane, Margaret Alamida, Alexander, William and Melvin L. were also born here.

In 1870 Joseph and Elizabeth are found in Bazaar Township, Chase County, Kansas. Daughter, Cora Edith was born there 01 January 1871. Elizabeth Herring’s Mother died in Millcreek Township, Clarion County in 1854. After the deaths of Elizabeth (Brenneman) McNaughton and then James McNaughton in 1859, John and Barbara are found together. This has resulted in the two families being mixed. There are conflicting stories as to whether John and Barbara are buried in Matfield Green or Scotch Hill, Clarion County, Pennsylvania which was laid out by James McNaughton. From 1880 til their deaths, Joseph and Elizabeth resided in Matfield Green and are buried at Matfield Green Cemetery.
