Chase County Sketches

HOTELS
L.D. Hinckley built the first hotel in Cottonwood falls in 1867; years later, it became the
Commercial Hotel. The Ferlet Hotel, or Union Hotel,
was located on the west side of the street. Later
Geo. McNee bought the property, and built the house
where Mr. and Mrs. Ernest McKenzie lived for so
many years.
The George Beaver's live there now, having
purchased it recently.
In 1884, Henry Bonewell built the Eureka House
which was located on the east side of the street, on the corner just northeast of the Courthouse. It was a large brick building, and after, being used no longer as a hotel,
housed a millinery store and various other businesses over the years, until it was torn down and a
filling station took its place.
The Central Hotel or
American Hotel (west side of street) had a public
well in front of it. The large public well, remembered by many, was at the intersection of Main and
Broadway.
