Hussong, Ann Roniger
Ann Roniger, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Pascal
A. Roniger, was reared in Chase County at the
family farm on Diamond Creek. She was an enthu
siast in the field of track on a local, state, national
and international level.
She participated the first time at the Chase
County Grade School Track Meet at the age of eight,
and was then in the second grade of Elmdale Grade
School. This was in 1951. In 1957, 1958 and 1959
she was the National Pentathlon Champion. The
pentathlon events for women consist of the 80 meter
hurdles, shot put, running broad jump, high jump,
and the 200 meter run. In 1959 she competed in the
Russian-American Track Meet in Philadelphia and
she also competed in the 1959 Pan-American Games
held in Chicago. She was selected as the outstanding amateur athlete of 1959 by the Missouri Valley
Amateur Athletic Union.
Ann graduated from high school in 1959 and in
1960 attended college in Ft. Collins, Colorado because Colorado State had a Women's Track Team.
She participated on their team and was then given
a full track scholarship to attend the University of
Hawaii in Honolulu. She participated in track there
in 1960-61.
It was in Honolulu she met William A.
Hussong, Jr., who graduated from the University
of Hawaii in 1961. They were married July 28, 1962
and lived in Maryland where "Bill" taught school
and was director of a health and recreation center.
Ann completed her college work at the University of
Maryland in 1964 receiving her BS degree in Health
Education. Her husband then enlisted in the Army
and became a member of the regular army for a
career. Ann has since been a busy housewife rearing their family and being active in the Army wives'
activities.
The Hussongs have three children - Will born
in September 1964; Shawn in June, 1966; and Stephanie in July 1969. They are presently living in
New York where Bill is teaching at Westpoint Academy.
Ann's track trophies are on display in the
Roniger Memorial Museum. Two of her most avid
fans were her great Uncles Frank and George Roniger.
