Whittington, Ladene Gunter

Lander Gunter Whittington

Ladene Whittington, 69, of Americus died Monday, Nov 29, 2004, at Emporia Presbyterian Manor.

The daughter of Walter C. and Mary AnnaLeigh Vermillion Gunter, she was born Feb. 3, 1935, in Reading. She graduated from Reading High School in 1953 and attended Ottawa University.

She married David L. "D.L." Whittington on Nov 23, 1956, in Emporia. He died Nov. 22, 2004.

She was an accounts payable clerk at Emporia State University for more than 20 years before she retired in 1994 because of illness.

Earlier, she worked at the cafeteria at Lowther School in Emporia. She worked at the telephone office in Reading before she moved to Americus in 1969.

Mrs. Whittington was a member of the Southern Baptist Church in Americus. She also was a member of the Sweet Adelines choral group.

She is survived by a daughter, Tammy Sue Whittington of Americus; a son, David Lee Whittington of Strong City; a sister, Verlene Evans of Tecumseh; a brother, Kenneth Gunter of Powerview, Manitoba, Canada; a stepsister, Maureen Coleman of Wichita; a stepbrother, David Pickett of Lee's Summit, Mo.; four grand-children; and four great-grandchildren.

The funeral was Saturday, Nov 27, 2004, at the Jones VanArsdale Funeral Home in Lebo. Burial will be in Reading Cemetery.

Memorial contributions in her name to the Alzheimer's Association may be sent in care of the funeral home, 107 W. Sixth Ave., Lebo, KS 66856.
