Topic: McGREGORs - Scotland->Missouri->Cherokee Co. KS
From: Chris Kneupper
Date: Saturday, July 29, 2000 02:26 PM

Am researching my wife's ancestors (Duncan McGREGOR & parents) from Linn Co. MO, originally from Scotland (Cathcart, Renfrewshire) but who emigrated to Nova Scotia about 1830 before returning to Scotland in about 1835. Duncan and two brothers emigrated from Scotland to MO in about 1867, with the two brothers originally settling in Ray Co. MO, but who seem to have moved to Columbus or Scammon in Cherokee Co. KS in the period between 1870 & 1875, probably as workers or supervisors in coal mines located there. This involved a George McGREGOR (born about 1834 in Nova Scotia, married 1864 in Beith, Scotland to Margaret LAWNS) and their son George aka "Long George" (born 1870 in Ray Co. MO). The son married Mary Ellen WINTERS in Linn Co. MO on 21 Dec 1896, but seems to have lived his life in Cherokee Co. KS. Also locating in Cherokee Co. was George's brother named John (born 1829 in Cathcart; married Julia LASTER in Ray Co. MO in 1869), and a nephew (Duncan's son) named John W. McGREGOR (born 28 Aug 1863 in Beith, Ayrshire, Scotland; died 1957 in Columbus KS). This last fellow seems to have married in KS to Ida Martha EDWARDS (1875-1955) and had children Thelma, Jenette, Nellie, Maggie, Floyd, John, and Dan McGREGOR. Jenette was known to be living in Columbus as of 1965. I'd like to contact any KS descendants of this branch or others interested in tracing the family history & genealogy. Please contact me directly by e-mail. Thanks!

I am researching information on my great grandparents Anna C. Murphy, Francis William Foley, Alma Nancy Wickersham, and Albert John Mellow. Anyone with any information on any of these surnames may contact me for additional information. These families all lived in the area of Galena, Melrose, Columbus, and Joplin, MO in the 1870's to 1920's. Some family members still reside in Cherokee County. I am interested in talking to all relatives, even the distant ones.
