Capt. B. W. Ladd Dead.

Captain Benjamin W. Ladd, a Wilson county pioneer, died at his home in Fredonia last Sunday night of paralysis, age 74 years and 8 months.

Benjamin W. Ladd was a native of Highland county, Ohio. He entered the Union army April 6, 1862, enlisted in Company A, Forty-eighth Ohio Infantry as a private and soon rose to the captaincy of his company. Captain Ladd was with his regiment from the date of his enlistment until the close of the war, was wounded at Shiloh, and with his regiment, was captured April 8, 1864, and held until exchanged October 23, following.

He was mustered out at Galveston, Texas, June 1, 1886, Captain Ladd came to Wilson county, Kansas, 1867, locating on a farm southeast of Altoona, where he lived for a great many years. He was elected sheriff of Wilson county in Wilson county in November 1869, and re-elected two years later serving two terms of two year’s each. In 1904 he was elected probate judge and re-elected two years later. Since retiring from office he has resided in Fredonia. Funeral services were held last Tuesday. The body was brought to the Altoona cemetery for burial. The local A. F. & A. M. lodge of which he was a member, conducting services at the grave. A number of Fredonia friends accompanied the body to its last resting place. Capt. B. W. Ladd was a republican in politics, he cast his first vote for Lincoln for president in 1864 while in the army and voted for every Republican nominee for president since that time. He was a kind, generous man, whom everybody liked. His friends and friendships were sacred to him.
