Pneumonia Proves Fatal to Former

Mayor, Who Came to

State in 1867.

  Charles J. Drew, mayor of Topeka in 1899 and 1900, died at 9 o’clock last night after a month’s illness from the grippe which developed into pneumonia.  Mr. Drew caught a severe cold and on account of his age was unable to throw it off.  It gradually grew worse and three days ago symptoms of pneumonia became apparent.  He recovered slightly just before his death.

  Former Mayor Drew was born at Wilson, Conn., June 15, 1838.  He was the son of Edward and Permelia Rockwell Drew.  In 1871 he married Emma Boughton, of Seneca, Kan.  Mrs. Drew and one son, Charles H. Drew, of St. Joseph, Mo. survive.

  When he was only 16 years old Mr. Drew went to sea.  For three years he was a quarter gunner and later, he spent five years in the merchant service.

  In March, 1867, Mr. Drew moved to Junction City, and in September of the same year came to Topeka.  He was elected councilman and served four years in that capacity.  In 1899 he was elected mayor, serving one term.  He refused a second term when asked to make the race.

  After quitting politics Mr. Drew became a masonry contractor and was well known over the state.  He superintended the extension of the Melari Bridge several years ago.  About three years ago he retired and has been living quietly at his home, 513 Clay street.  Funeral arrangements have not been announced.
