Comrade D. H. Jeffcoat.

  Again we are called upon to pay a last tribute of respect to one of our Comrades who has heard and answered to the last roll call.  For nearly seventy-six years our Comrade Daniel H. Jeffcoat walked among men doing faithfully both as a citizen and soldier, his work as it came to him.  For three years from August 5th, 1862 to August 1865, as a member of Company I, 76 Illinois Infantry, he performed the duties and shared the dangers common to country’s defenders.  At Vicksburg, Mississippi, in May and June 1863, and again in March and April 1865, with many intervening actions with comrades of his regiment, he proved that he was not too proud to fight, or afraid to meet even death when duty and country called.

  Since the close of the war first in his native state of Illinois and since 1876 in Kansas he has demonstrated that a brave soldier makes a devoted peace loving citizen.  During the last month of suffering his children have faithfully ministered to his wants.  The loved wife and mother having preceeded him to the better home.

  And now we, his comrades of Abilene Post, come to mingle our tears with and to extend to his children our sincere and unfeigned sympathy in this hour of bereavement.

  Therefore be it, Resolved by the members of Abilene Post No. 63, department of Kansas G. A. R. that we do hereby most sincerely extend to the children and other relatives of our departed comrade our profound sympathy in the loss of this good father and friend.  And would remind them that he is now in the Hands not Only of a Just Judge but a kind loving Father.

  Resolved that a copy of these resolutions be spread upon the minutes of the post and a copy given the members of the family.
