OBITUARY.

David A. Hanna was born Oct. 11, 1836, in Jennings county, Ind. and was the son of Thomas and Jane Hanna. His father was a native of Scotland. At the age twenty-five he enlisted as a private in Company D of the 37th Ind. Infantry, for a term of three years. From this service he was honorably discharged at Chattanooga, Feb. 11, 1864, and on the following day, re-enlisted, and served until July 25, 1865, receiving his honorable discharge at Louisville. In just a short while after this he enlisted in the regular standing army and served as sergeant for three years. After his service in the army he went to Johnson Co. Ind. At this place he was married Dec. 14, 1871, to Miss Nancy Ellen Rutherford, who survives, to mourn his departure. He and his wife came to Elk county Kansas, in February of 1883 and he engaged in farming. Owing to failing health he gave up farming and moved to Howard in 1901.

In early manhood he professed faith in the Lord Jesus Christ and united with the Presbyterian church. For some twelve or fifteen years before his death he was an honored member of the Howard Presbyterian church. He was a man of few words, but spoke much in his deeds in quite, unobstrusive, loving helpfulness. He died about 11 o’clock Thursday night Feb. 22, 1906, aged sixty-nine years, four months and eleven days. Funeral services were held in the Presbyterian church, conducted by Rev. J. E. Deggendorf. The E. M. Stanton Post, G. A. R. accompanied the remains to the church, and concluded the burial in Grace Lawn cemetery with their ritual and military honors.
