Eli Alfred Downs was born July 28,
1834, died April 19, 1916, aged 81 years, 8 months and 22 days. He came to
Kansas from Illinois in 1870, was married to Sarah Harbour in 1876. To
this union were born 4 children, two of whom survive him: James A. Downs,
of Lyndon and Mrs. Archie Clark, of Melvern. He was a member of the
Methodist church since 1878, until removing to Mount Pleasant where he joined
the United Brethren church with his neighbors in which communion he
continued until his death.
He joined the colors of his
country in her civil strife at the commencement of the war. Enlisting for
six months at the close of which term he re-enlisted serving the full four years
of the war, marching with Sherman to the Sea.
A career of toil, strife,
citizenship and family life ended to earth but gone on for full fruition and
reward into the great beyond.
The services were held at the home
of James A. Downs in Lyndon, April 20, a goodly number of friends and neighbors
attending to hear the address given by Rev. J. B. Gilstrow of Lyndon.
Interment was made the day
following at the Harbour cemetery east of Overbrook on the old home place of the
deceased’s wife’s people.
