DYE—In Burlington Kansas, February 26, 1885, of consumption, Eltora Dye; aged 42 years and 2 days.

Obituary.

Mr. E. L. Dye, whose death was recently recorded in this paper, was an old soldier of Co. E, 5th Kansas Volunteer Cavalry, and one of the early settlers of Coffey county, settling here in 1860.  In 1861 he inlisted under the first call for Kansas troops for three years, and at the expiration of his term he reinlisted as a veteran and served on until the close of the war in 1865.  He was a good and faithful soldier, true as steele to his flag and country.  He had for years been a sufferer from disease contracted in the army while lying on the damp, cold ground in the swamps of Arkansas and from other continued exposure and hardships, and from which after years of intense suffering death came to his relief.  For ten weeks and two days he was confined to his bed unable to assist himself, entirely dependent upon those about him.  When nearing his last hour a sister who lives at a distance was dispatched for.  She arrived in time to spend a few hours at his dying bed side and soothe him while passing through the valley and shadow of death.  Up to his last hour he spoke of the great kindness that the old soldiers and members of Allison Post, No. 16, G. A. R., had shown to him and his family, and in this connection the family desires to extend their heart-felt thanks to them for the many kindnesses to the living and dead.  Mr. Dye’s last words were:  “Glory to God in the highest; and on earth peace, good will to men.”  He leaves a wife and five children who mourn the loss of a good and faithful husband and a kind father.  He was born in Hancock county, Illinois, Feb. 24, 1842 and died Feb. 26, 1885.
