George Wagner, who has been one of the highly respected and successful citizens of this community ever since he located here 39 years ago, died at his home just west of Erie, Thursday, June 10, 1920, at the age of 78 years. In his death the community has lost another pioneer and a man who did his part towards making this community the splendid place it now is.

George W. Wagner was born in Union county, Indiana, February 25th, 1842. At the age of 16 he moved with his parents to Noblesville, Hamilton county, Indiana. It was there that he was united in marriage to Miss Harriet George, March 27th 1872. Four children were born to them. Three of these with the widow survive him. They are: Eliza, wife of J. E. Mull, of Topeka, Kansas; Fred A. Wagner, of Topeka, Kansas; and Bess, wife of Fred Moore of Eastland, Texas. All were present at the time of the father’s death. James M. the second born of the children died in infancy.

Mr. Wagner’s parents were members of the Lutheran church and he was baptized in that faith. During the Civil War he enlisted for the Union Army. He belonged to Company I, of the 153rd Indiana Infantry, serving until the close of the war. In the year 1881 with his wife and children he came to Kansas, landing here on the 20th day of August. This was his home until the time of his death, which occurred the morning of June 10th, 1920.

He was a member of the Erie Post of the Grand Army of the Republic.

Aside from his own immediate family the only surviving relatives of Mr. Wagner are seven nephews, sons of his deceased sister.

His age was 78 years, 3 months and 15 days.

The funeral services were conducted at the home at 3 p, m. Friday, June 11th. The interment was made in the Erie cemetery. A Frank Johnson, Jr. of the Presbyterian church was the officiating minister.
