Death of a Veteran.

J. D. Dugan, an aged citizen and veteran of the war of the rebellion, passed quietly and peacefully to his last rest at his home on south Silver street last Saturday evening, August 8, at 9 o’clock. He had been in failing health for several years and for four months previous to his death was almost constantly confined to his bed, with kidney trouble and complications. He was sixty-eight years of age.

Mr. Dugan was a native of Pennsylvania and when a young man went to Indiana, where he resided a number of years and married Miss Mary Sams, his surviving wife. They moved from Indiana to Benton co., Mo., from where they removed to a farm north of Paola twelve years ago, and ten years ago came to Paola. During the civil war Mr. Dugan enlisted in an Indiana regiment, serving four years under Gen. Sherman. He was in twenty prominent battles and never received a wound, although always in the ranks. As well as being a brave soldier, he was a good citizen, and an honest man. He was a member of McCaslin Post G. A. R., and when in good health regularly attended the meetings of the post.

With his wife he leaves six children, Mrs. Ida Sterns, wife of Elmer Sterns of Paola, Mrs. Minnie Hawkins, wife of Charles Hawkins of Topeka, John Dugan, whose present residence is not known, and James Hiram and William Dugan of Paola. Funeral services, conducted by Rev. W. G. Carey and in charge of McCaslin Post, were held from the residence Monday at 10 o’clock a. m. The remains were buried in the Paola cemetery.
