Well Know Citizen Dead.

J. W. Swearingen, well known in Paola, died Saturday night at his home in the north part of town. For several months he had not been feeling well, but his condition was not considered serious until ten days before his death, when he was taken to his bed. His death is attributed to a tumor of the stomach and heart trouble.

Mr. Swearingen was born September 4, 1842, at Bloomington, Indiana. He grew up there and at the opening of the Civil war enlisted in the 82nd Indiana regiment. At the close of the war he returned to Bloomington, and on March 16, 1869, he was married to his surviving wife, whose name was Elizabeth Terrell. From Indiana they moved to Garnett, Kas., in 1872, residing in Anderson-co., until ten years ago, when they came to Paola.

Mr. Swearingen was an honest, hardworking man. For several years he had charge of the repair work for Thos. Oyster’s numerous residences. He was raised a Presbyterian of the old school, but of recent years attended the Christian church. With his wife he is survived by one daughter and three sons, Mrs. Maggie Hoover at Downs, Kas., H. T. Swearingen at Guthrie, Oklahoma, and Fred and Frank Swearingen of Paola. The funeral services, conducted by Rev. W. S. Lowe, and in charge of McCaslin Post G. A. R., of which he was a member, were held from the residence Monday afternoon. The remains were buried in the Paola cemetery.
