Old Resident and Old Soldier

Death came to Mr. J. B. Hayes at his home, 510 South Thirteenth, after a long illness, July 31, at the age of 72 years. He was born in Ohio, May 1, 1841, and enlisted in the Union army and with his wife and daughter came to Independence in 1882. He was an upright, Christian gentleman, a member of the United Brethren church and when in health was a worker. Since the death of his wife, he has made his home with his daughter, Mrs. Frank G. Harper, from where the funeral was held Friday at 4 p.m. in charge of his pastor, Rev. Mr. Hall of the United Brethren church, who returned from his vacation trip in Missouri, at request of the family. Members of the Grand Army under Commander E. T. Mears assembled at the home, where the funeral ritual service was held, but only a few could go to the cemetery.
