Death of James Fergus.

James A. Fergus died at his home in Toronto last Tuesday morning after a prolonged and painful illness. He was 56 years, 9 months and 19 days old. He had resided in Kansas more than 24 years and was well known in this community. A family of three survive him, a wife, one son and a daughter. Mr. Fergus was born in Shelby county, Ohio, October 14, 1843. When 18 years old he enlisted in Co. E, 27th Ill. Volunteer Infantry. While in service he was injured and honorably discharged. Later he reenlisted in Co. A, 2nd Illinois Cavalry and served through out the remainder of the Civil war.

September 15, 1878, he was married to Miss Melvina Silvers at Groveland, Illinois. The following year they came to Kansas. In 1889 Mr. Fergus united with the Methodist church and remained a member until the time of his death. More than twenty years ago, Mr. Fergus suffered a paralytic stroke and for several years had been bed ridden. He was well known in this vicinity and has many warm friends. The funeral services which were held last Wednesday afternoon, conducted by the Rev. Cargay, were largely attended by friends and relatives of the family. Interment was in the Toronto cemetery. The bereaved relatives are tendered the deepest sympathies of the many friends.
