James U. Brown

The death of James U. Brown occurred at a Topeka hospital on Friday evening of last week, following an operation a fortnight previous for bladder trouble. The news of his death was unexpected as favorable reports had been received as to his condition. Mr. Brown had lived in his community since 1881. For years he was employed in Martin Lund’s wagon shop, and had many friends among those with whom he dealt in a business way. Mr. Brown always looked on the sunny side of life. No prospect too gloomy but that he saw an optimistic side, and he will be missed by every on who knew him.

Funeral services were held at the M. E. church Sunday afternoon. It was Memorial Sunday and the occasion was most appropriate for the burial of this old soldier. Because of the inclemency of the weather, the Grand Army service was held in the church instead of at the graveside, and “Taps” were blown at the conclusion of this service at the church also.

James U. Brown was born in Smithfield township, Jefferson county, Ohio, on June 4, 1840. He departed this life May 24, 1917, aged 76 years, 11 months and 20 days. He enlisted in the Civil war in 1862 and was wounded after serving eleven months. Mr. Brown was married to Miss Mary M. Waddle, May 30, 1863. To this union four children were born: Luelia R. Bradford, who died in 1882; Iris A. Kamenky of Cozad, Nebr.; Edward T. Brown, of Emporia, Kan., and Nannie M. Baird of Kansas City, Kan. Besides the three children he is survived by two grand-daughters, Velma and Mary Baird, and by two brothers, Noble U. Brown, of Mount Pleasant, Ohio, and Joseph U. Brown, of this township. The three brother bore the middle name of Upedyke, their mother’s middle name.

He united with the Protestant Methodist church at Ottawa, Kan. in 1879. The family moved to this city in the spring of 1881. His wife died April 20, 1901. On May 24, 1906. Mr. Brown was united in marriage to Mrs. Ellen M. Taylor, and his death occurred on the eleventh anniversary of their marriage. Relatives here to attend the funeral were Mrs. Iris Kamenky, of Cozad, Nebr.; Mr. and Mrs. Harry Baird and daughters, of Kansas City; Mr. and Mrs. Ed. Brown and daughter, of Emporia; A. G. Waddle, and daughter, of Osage City; Mrs. Lacy McCammon, of Topeka, and Mr. and Mrs. E. E. Taylor of Council Grove, Kansas.
