Man Is Dead.

  Chetopa, Kan., Aug 22—The funeral of Col. J. B. Cook veteran of the Civil war and one of the pioneer residents of Labette county, was held here today.

  Colonel Cook was one of the best known real estate men in southeast Kansas.  He was born in Lancaster county, Pennsylvania, June 22, 1834.  In November, 1853, he went to California, where he spent three years in mining and herding cattle.  A short time after his return to Pennsylvania, in 1857, he came to Kansas City, where he bought some property.  He took a prominent part in the border warfare between Kansas and Missouri.  In 1860 he went to Illinois, where he purchased a farm in Tazewell county, where he remained until the Civil war broke out in 1861.

  He enlisted as a private in the Fourth Illinois cavalry and was colonel when the war ended.  He took part in many battles.  He won his promotions on account of his brilliant exploits.

  He came to Chetopa in 1870 and had been in the real estate business since 1874.  He was mayor of Chetopa seven years.  He was in two sessions of the Kansas legislature.  He was one of the first projectors of the Missouri Pacific railroad through Chetopa and was first vice-president of the company which built that branch of the road.
