Obituary---J. T. Shields.

John T. Shields was born August 18, 1838, in Cass County, Indiana. He faithfully served three years in the Civil War to preserve the Union, in Co. B, 46th Indiana Volunteer Infantry, was engaged in forty-six battles and was honorably discharged April 26, 1863. Mr. Shields was a member of Vicksburg Post No. 72, G. A. R., Humboldt, Kansas, and a member of Lincoln Circle No. 1, Logansport, Indiana. He became a citizen of Humboldt in 1885. He was a kind and loving husband and father. He is survived by his wife, two daughters, Mrs. Adelia Cree and Mrs. Margaret Wright of Logansport, Indiana, and two sons, Mr. Wm. Shields of Logansport, Indiana, and Mr. Chas. Shields of Humboldt. Also four step-children, Mrs. Chas. Shields, Mrs. Chas. Baxley, Miss Amy Myers and Mr. Eny Myers of this city.

Deceased was a member of the Masonic and I. O. O. F. lodges at Logansport, Indiana.

His cheerful smile and Kindly grasp

are pleasant to recall;

He had a kindly word for each and

died beloved by all.

Fresh to our mind his memory

clings, yet still our grief is sore;

Each passing day but nearer brings

The day we’ll meet once more.

Mr. Shields took part in forty-six battles of the Civil War:

New Madrid, Island No. 10, Riddles’s Point, Fort Pillow, Osceola, Memphis, Saint Charles, Clarendon, Helena, Napoleon, Grand Prairie, Crockett’s Bluff, Duvall’s Bluff, Tallahatchie, Coldwater, Yazoo Pass, Fort Pemberton, Grand Gulf, Port Gibson, 14 Mile Creek, Raymond, Jackson, Champion’s Hill, Big Black River, Vicksburg, Jackson (second battle), Grand Coteau, Spanish Lake, Vermillionville, Nelson’s Farm, Sabine Cross Roads, Pleasant Hill, Red River, Shawneetwon, Saltville, Prestonburg, Cattlesburg, Barres’ Landing, Fort Randolph, Atchafalaga Bay, Silver Springs, Fort Greenwood, Baton Rouge.
