BALES

John R. Bales was born in Randolph county, Ind., on Sept. 10, 1846, and passed on at his home in Yates Center, Kansas, on March 1, 1912, age 65 years.

Born of Christian parents, he united with the Christian church at an early age. Heeding his country’s call for more volunteers, he inlisted in Co. G, Regiment 124, Indiana Volunteer Infantry, on Nov. 28, 1863, and was honorably discharged at Atlanta, Ga., on Aug. 31, 1865. He was in a number of important battles and was with Sherman on his march to the sea. After the war he returned to Indiana and engaged in farming. On Sept. 25, 1868 he was united in marriage to Miss Samantha Morris. To this union was born three children, one having preceded him in infancy. In the fall of 1869 they came to Cass county, Mo., where they lived two years, when they returned to their native state. They again moved west in July, 1884, and located on a farm in Liberty township, and lived there until March 1, 1911, when they moved to their present home in Yates Center.

He was a charter member and one of the trustees of the First Church of Christ Scientist, in Yates Center. He leaves to mourn his loss a wife, and two children, Walter M. Bales and Mrs. C. M. Kinyon, and two grandchildren, Keith and Vesta Kenyon, and a sister, Mrs. F. T. C. Whiteford. Also a brother and sister in the east. The funeral services were held at the home Sunday afternoon, March 3, 1912, conducted by Bro. Casey, of the Christian Science church.
