John W. Duncan was born Nov. 21, 1847, in Putnam county, Ind. He married Elizabeth J. Owen Jan. 9, 1868. Since 1878 his home has been in Allen county, near Humboldt, the past 14 years having been spent on the farm in Cottage Grove, where he died at 3 a. m. Tuesday, Feb. 8, 1898.

During the civil war he served in Co. H, 132d Indiana Volunteers. For many years he has been a member and officer of Cottage Grove M. E. church. He was also a charter member of the Knights and Ladies of Security. The companion of 30 years with seven children survive him, and mourn the loss of a loving husband and father. He was also a brother of J. P. Duncan, of Iola, and an uncle of Dr. H. E. Duncan of Humboldt.

Funeral services were conducted at the home by his pastor, Rev. F. W. Fenn, Wednesday p. m., and the body laid to rest in Mt. Hope cemetery, Humboldt council No. 218, K. & L. of S. furnishing pallbearers and assisting in the burial service.
