John Kreiss was born October 7, 1841, in Switzerland, and came to this country at the age of 4 years with his parents, settling in Knoxville, Tennessee, where he lived until February, 1870.
He then came to Kansas settling in Morris County.
He joined Co. K, First regiment of Tennessee infantry volunteers and was discharged from the services November 5, 1864.
Mr. Kreiss was married to Miss Tennessee Scott at Watburg, Tennessee, on February 24, 1876 (originally typed in wrong probably 1867). She died February 24, 1869. He married Miss Nancy Barber at Council Grove, April 24, 1870.
To this union three children were born. Mrs. B. J. Hough, of Des Moines, Iowa; John W. Kreiss, of Keosauqua, Iowa, and Mrs. Dora Whiteing, of St. Louis, Missouri.
Mr. Kreiss was again married to Miss Lueretia Acrea at Parkerville March 5, 1885, afterward moving to Council Grove where they resident until his death. Three children were born to this union: Harry, Lucy and Georgia. Mr. Kreiss joined the South M. E. Church along in the ‘70’s in which he was an active worker. He departed this life August 5, 1907, age 65 years, 9 months and 29 days.
The funeral services were held Wednesday, August 7, at 2 p. m. from the Christian church. The remains were laid to rest in Greenwood cemetery.
