J. E. SMOOT.

John Eziker Smoot was born near Marietta, Ohio, December 20, 1835. He died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Nick Haag near Alta Vista, Kansas on October 9, 1919, age 83 years 9 months and 19 days, after a brief illness.

He was united in marriage to Mary Frances Stone, August 13, 1866. To this union were born four sons and four daughters. His wife died March 14, 1915. The youngest son, John Addison departed this life May 20, 1917.

Mr. Smoot served thirty-four months in the Civil War, enlisting in Co. A the 9th Kansas. He was a member of the Methodist church. He with his wife was converted nine years ago. Mr. Smoot was a devoted husband, a kind and loving father and a friend to all. He leaves to mourn his departure his seven children: Mrs. E. A. Campbell of Enid, Okla., M. L. Smoot of Junction City, Kansas, W. A. Smoot of Eagle City, Okla., Mrs. J. A Bleier of Alta Vista, Kansas, Mrs. Nick Haag of Alta Vista, Kansas, Mrs. J. C. Campbell of Crescent, Okla. and O. E. Smoot of Enid, Oklahoma.

Mr. Smoot has the distinction of having forty four grand-children and twenty two great grand-children.

Funeral services were held on Saturday October 11, 1919, at the Methodist Church in Alta Vista at 4 p. m. The Rev. F. A. Whittlesey officiating. His text was ---“the days if our years are three score years and ten and if by reason of strength they be four score years, yet is their strength labor and sorrow; for it is soon cut off, and we fly away”—Ps. 90:10.

“Abide With Me,” “Lead Kindly Light,” and “Saved by Grace” were sung.

The interment was in the Pleasant Mound cemetery, southeast of town.

MRS. J. E. SMOOT

Mary Frances Stone was born in Kentucky, April 4, 1851. At an early age she came with her parents to Cass County, Missouri. Later she moved to Jackson County, Missouri, and there she was married to John E. Smoot, in August, 1866. With her husband she came to Kansas that same year, making their home near Lawrence, where their family of eight children, four boys and four girls, were born.

Following are the names of the children: Mrs. Sadie Campbell, Breckenridge, Okla. Lee Smoot, Junction City, Ks.; Will Smoot, Eagle City, Okla; Mrs. J. A. Bleier, Alta Vista; Mrs. N. Haag, Alta Vista; Mrs. Etta Campbell, Crescent, Okla. Oliver Smoot, Wichita; J. A. Smoot, Valancia, Kansas.

In 1866 the family moved to near Dwight where they lived three years and then moved to what is now known as the Bleier farm and made their home at that place until Brother and Sister Smoot have made their home in Alta Vista.

The unusual features of the home of which the deceased has been the center of so many years is, that of the eight children born to the parents none were lost, and of the forty-two grand-children only one died, while all of the ten grand-children living.

None but friends and neighbors who have been in often, know how greatly sister Smoot suffered through these last weeks. But she had the best of care and the devotion of her family.

She departed this life Sunday evening at 5:35, leaving her husband, her eight children and their families, and an only sister, Mrs. Eliza Woods, of Lawrence Kansas to morn he loss.

Funeral services were held from the M. E. Church Tuesday afternoon at 1:30, conducted by her pastor, Rev. McProud. Interment was made in the White cemetery east of town.
