Obituary

John H. Sturdivan was born in Illinois, Jan. 22, 1842 and with his parents he moved to Kansas at the age of 13. They located at a place called “Hickory Point” near Lawrence, Kansas. On the account of the border ruffian war they moved back to Illinois in 1857. They returned to Kansas and located in Anderson county near Garnett, where they lived until 1860. When they returned to Illinois. Here he enlisted in Co. E, 14th regiment of the Missouri Volunteers as a sharpshooter July 10, 1862. He was captured by Gen. Price, and was honorably discharged Oct. 1, 1862, and returned to Rock Island, Ill., where he was married to Miss Mary G. Tebbins, Sept. 16, 1862, and Aug. 5, 1863, he re-inlisted in Co. E, 126th Regiment of Ill. Volunteers and remained to the service until the close of the war, and was honorably discharged July 12, 1865. He then returned home to his wife and to this union was born 4 children, Myron Douglas, Ann Elizabeth, Jennett Rose and Harry Clark. They all live on their farms in Woodson county Kansas near Gridley, except Anna Elizabeth, who died March 14, 1874, at the age of 2 years. He moved near Gridley in 1869, where he remained until his death.

He became a member of the United Brethern church in early youth. He joined the Wesley Chapel church here when it was first built. He has been very feeble for many years yet endured his affliction with meekness and at the close of the present illness he passed quietly and peacefully into the great beyond.

He died at his home Oct. 30th, 1916, at the age of 73 years, 10 months and 8 days. He was a kind father and very fond of children. He leaves to mourn his loss, his wife, 3 children, 9 grandchildren, 2 great-grand children, 2 brothers, and 3 sisters.
